December 2019 services
Tuesday, 10th December – Advent Peace ½ hour service of prayer, silence & Gregorian chant at Crudwell at 6pm.
Sunday, 15th December – Nativity service at Oaksey at 11am. Doors open at 10am.
Calling children of all ages!
Please do come along and take part in our very popular Nativity play. We need young children to take the parts of Angels, Shepherds and Kings plus more children and adults to help. We would also like older children to come along and participate in telling the Christmas story.
As in previous years, we will be having a small, friendly pony that will play a prominent part, so please do support this service and ensure we have another good turnout.
Hope to see you at 10am on 15th December (for an 11am start) to select your part and costume.
For more information, please call Helen McKenna on 577279.
Tuesday, 17th December – Advent Peace ½ hour service of prayer, silence & Gregorian chant at Crudwell at 6pm.
Saturday, 21st December – Carols by Candlelight service at 5pm.
The service will be followed by sherry & mince pies.
All sidesmen are asked to be at the Church by 4.15pm to help with the preparations.
Wednesday, 25th December – Christmas Day Holy Communion service at 11am.
Sunday, 29th December – Group service at Hankerton at 10am.
January 2020 services
Sunday, 12th January (The Baptism of Christ) – Benefice Holy Communion service at Charlton at 10am to celebrate those who have recently been confirmed.
Greetings from Revd. Tonya
I wonder have you bought your advent calendar yet? If you have, is it full of chocolate? Does it show pictures of your favourite pet, pictures of Christmas stockings or does it tell the Christmas story?
The Advent calendar began as a way of anticipating Christmas. 24 windows to open during the month of December and each picture revealing an aspect of the Christmas story.
There is a rather intriguing company out there called: The Meaningful Chocolate Company. And it appears to give the customer all that its name promises. The Real Advent Calendar is the UK’s only Fairtrade Advent calendar. This is what it offers:
- Each calendar comes with a Christmas story – activity booklet designed to be used each day in Advent. Behind each of the 25 windows there is a Fairtrade Belgian chocolate and a line of the Christmas story.
- Made, designed and produced in the UK.
- Money raised from this year’s Real Advent Calendar will help The Funzi and Bodo Trust.
- Plastic tray made from recycled material.
- Card can be recycled.
Sounds too good to be true? You would think so, but in fact not.
A recent ComRes survey found that only 12% of adults in the UK and just 7% of 18-24 year olds know the Christmas story. It leads me to wonder, how on earth have we got to this?
An invitation to have a meaningful Christmas is often the message you get from the Church. But what does it really mean? What is a meaningful Christmas?
Buying and wrapping lots of presents maybe? Decorating the house and creating a wonderful dinner? Both? I guess for many people it’s both, but surely it should be so much more.
To have a meaningful Christmas, we have to know the Christmas story.
This Advent and Christmas, perhaps we could find time to stop and read the story afresh. There are so many different ways to do this: Books, films, music……………and now, of course, the Real Advent Calendar from The Meaningful Chocolate Company!
There are also many services and special events over this period in your Church. Some are quiet and reflective, others are more in the party mode, as well as the traditional carol services.
Come and be a part of something meaningful this Christmas. I look forward to seeing you.
With every blessing for a Happy Christmas.
P.S. The Real Advent Calendar is available through Traidcraft & certain supermarkets!
Benefice Christmas Card
Included in this double issue of Oaksey Village News is a Benefice Christmas card from the PCC here in Oaksey and the other five Churches that make up the Braydon Brook Group of Churches.
PCC Drinks Party – a date for your diary
An advance notice to let you know that this will be held on Saturday, 22nd February 2020 at Oaksey House from 6pm to 8pm. The purpose of the party is to not only thank all those who have helped the Church in any way, but also to extend the invitation to everyone who has helped with other village activities, such as the Fete, the Shop, the Village Hall, the Playing Field, the Lunch Club, PHEW, the W.I. the School Governors, the History Society and, of course, the Parish Council. It will also be an ideal opportunity to welcome recent arrivals to the village. Please also remember to bring your diaries with you as the party will be an opportunity for you to volunteer to man the Church throughout the summer months from Saturday, 21st March 2020 to Saturday, 10th October 2020, inclusive, from 10am to 4pm (in 2-hour slots).
Oaksey Lunch Club
The next lunch will be on Wednesday, 11th December at 1pm in the Rest at a cost of £6.00 per head. Please note that this is a week earlier than normal. Unless you are known as a ‘regular’, please let Miriam (577689) know by Wednesday, 4th December if you are planning to come.
Miriam would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who have helped in any way over the past year, whether it was preparing food, serving the meals or washing up afterwards. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
The Lunch Club would like to continue in the future, but this does, of course, depend on volunteers coming forward. So, if you feel that you could spare a couple of hours each month (except August), please let Miriam know on the above number.
The lunch in January will be on Wednesday, 15th
January 2020 at 1pm in the Rest at the usual cost of £4.00 per head.
