In addition to the regular services at Oaksey in February, there will be a Benefice Holy Communion service at Crudwell on Sunday, 9th February at 10am.
A Benefice Ash Wednesday Holy Communion service will be held at Oaksey on Wednesday, 26th February at 7pm.
Greetings from Revd. Tonya
Recently I walked through each of the churchyards in our parishes and I was struck by the story they tell of the locality in which we live. Some stones recorded the deaths of young people below the age of five while others spoke of young men who died due to war. Some of the stones are very large and ostentatious, while others are modest. So many have loving inscriptions of beloved, devoted husbands or wives, sons or daughters, parents and grandparents written upon them. As I walked through the churchyards, I found myself wondering what life was like for these people. And asking the question:
What was their mark on life?
You see it will not matter one little bit how big a gravestone is that marks the place where you are laid. What really matters is what you have done with your life leading up to the point when you were committed to the ground and how you spent your life.
Was it fruitful? Did it have joy? Did it have hope? Did it have love?
2020 is already a month in. Some of us will have made and broken resolutions, others of us may still be trying hard to keep the promises which we made to ourselves. I make New Year resolutions, some years I’m more successful than others in keeping them! But I do hope that each New Year I might make a difference to someone or something.
None of us knows what 2020 will bring, but perhaps words by the poet Robert Browning, in his poem ‘Life in a Love’, might help:
But what if I fail of my purpose here?
It is but to keep the nerves at strain,
To dry one’s eye and laugh at a fall,
and baffled, get up to begin again –
so, the chase takes up one’s life, that’s all’.
I pray that God blesses whatever you do during 2020.
Thank you – Many worked hard to prepare our Churches and worship for Christmastide. How wonderful the Churches looked and there have been many appreciative remarks about our services.
Thank you – Mark & I are very grateful for all your good wishes, cards and gifts.
I hope that you found something of the blessings of Christmas.
PCC Drinks Party
This will be held on Saturday, 22nd February at Oaksey House from 6pm to 8pm. The purpose of the party is to not only thank all those who have helped the Church in any way, but also to extend the invitation to everyone who has helped with other village activities, such as the Fete, the Shop, the Village Hall, the Playing Field, the Lunch Club, PHEW, the School Governors, the History Society and, of course, the Parish Council.
It will also be an ideal opportunity to welcome recent arrivals to the village.
Please also remember to bring your diaries with you as the party will be an opportunity for you to volunteer to man the Church throughout the summer from Saturday, 21st March 2020 to Saturday, 10th October 2020, inclusive, from 10am to 4pm (in 2-hour slots).
Oaksey Lunch Club
The next lunch will be on Wednesday, 19th February at 1pm in the Rest at a cost of £4.00 per head. Unless you are known as a ‘regular’, please let Miriam (577689) know by Wednesday, 12th February if you are planning to come.
